The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh is proud to announce the official opening of its newly renovated Orange Unit, designed to provide a welcoming, healing-centered environment for children with medical complexities and their families.
The space was previously occupied by the inpatient rehabilitation unit of UPMC Children’s Hospital of Pittsburgh, a wonderful partner of The Children’s Home, who rented the space for their rehab patients. Since then, The Children’s Home has transformed the space to better meet the growing needs of the children and families it serves.
The
newly reimagined unit has been thoughtfully designed to promote healing, comfort, and growth while creating a bright, welcoming space where children can receive expert medical care while experiencing moments of joy, imagination, and play.
A highlight of the new unit is the unveiling of Rosalyn’s Nook, a dedicated play space created in memory of Rosalyn, lovingly known as “Rose.” Donated by her mother and father, Autumn & Richard. Rosalyn’s Nook offers children and families on the Orange Unit a special place to play, explore, and simply be children.
“Providing this Nook in Rosalyn’s name brings so much comfort to our family,” said Autumn. “Rosalyn brought so much joy and laughter into our lives, and reading was one of the things that brought her peace and comfort during her time in care. Knowing that this space will bring comfort, imagination, and healing to other children and families gives us a small sliver of peace and allows her memory to continue making an impact.”
Rosalyn and her twin brother, Reign, were born prematurely at 24 weeks. While Reign passed away shortly after birth, his brief life gave his sister a fighting chance. Rosalyn went on to courageously battle through her medical journey, but eventually lost her battle. Her family’s love of books, butterflies, and the message of Oh, the Places You’ll Go! inspired the spirit behind Rosalyn’s Nook, a place filled with hope, imagination, and possibility. A vibrant, colorful mural filled with butterflies and flowers adorns the space, serving as a beautiful reminder of Rosalyn and her brother Reign’s strength and playful spirits. The mural was created by 1Stop Vinyl Shop, with support from BOOM Concepts, whose partnership helped bring this meaningful vision to life.
The opening of the Orange Unit also marks a significant expansion in care capacity for The Children’s Home. Thanks to the dedicated leadership of Chief Nursing Officer Lisa Houlihan, the organization worked closely with the Pennsylvania Department of Health to secure licensure for the new inpatient beds. The Children’s Home is a Transitional Care Hospital, training families and caregivers to be the experts in their child’s complex medical needs.
The Orange Unit officially began admitting patients on May 12, 2026, and The Children’s Home looks forward to seeing the space filled with healing, laughter, resilience, and hope for years to come.
