Adolescence can be challenging, especially for teens navigating trauma, mental health concerns, identity development, or neurodivergence. At The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh, we provide compassionate, trauma-informed mental health services designed to help teens feel safe, understood, and supported.

Our approach centers on meeting teens where they are and helping them build the skills, confidence, and resilience they need to thrive.

A Safe Space to Be Yourself

Teens deserve a space where they can express themselves without fear of judgment. At The Children’s Home, we specialize in creating safe, affirming spaces that allow teens to explore their emotions, identities, and challenges at their own pace.

We support teens with:

  • Anxiety, depression, and mood concerns

  • Trauma and grief

  • Stress related to school, family, or relationships

  • Identity development and self-esteem

  • Emotional regulation and coping skills

Our care is individualized, strengths-based, and focused on what each teen needs most.

Trauma-Informed Therapy for Teens

All of our therapists are trauma-informed therapists, trained to recognize the impact of trauma on emotional, behavioral, and mental health. We understand that many teens carry experiences that shape how they relate to the world, school, family, and peers.

Our therapists prioritize:

  • Emotional and physical safety

  • Trust and transparency

  • Empowerment and choice

  • Collaboration and respect

We work to create a therapeutic environment where teens feel heard, valued, and in control of their healing process.

Support Groups for Youth in Foster Care

We offer dedicated support groups for youth in foster care, providing a space for connection with peers who share similar experiences. These groups help teens:

  • Build healthy relationships and peer support

  • Process transitions, loss, and uncertainty

  • Develop coping strategies and self-advocacy skills

  • Feel less alone in their experiences

Groups are facilitated by trauma-informed therapists who understand the unique challenges faced by youth in the foster care system.

Specialized Mental Health Support for Neurodivergent Youth

The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh is committed to supporting the mental health of neurodivergent teens, including youth with autism, ADHD, sensory processing differences, and other neurodivergent identities.

We recognize that neurodivergent teens often face increased stress, misunderstanding, social challenges, and anxiety. Our therapists take a neurodiversity-affirming approach, focusing on strengths rather than deficits.

Our neurodivergent youth mental health support includes:

  • Therapy that respects individual communication styles and sensory needs

  • Support with emotional regulation, anxiety, and social stress

  • Skill-building for self-advocacy, executive functioning, and coping

  • Group settings that promote belonging and peer connection

  • An affirming environment that honors each teen’s unique way of thinking and experiencing the world

We work closely with teens and families to ensure therapy feels accessible, validating, and meaningful.

Partnering With Families

We believe families play an important role in teen mental health. When appropriate, we collaborate with caregivers to provide guidance, education, and support while always respecting teen autonomy and confidentiality.
