Adoption-Competent Therapy

Whether families are created biologically or through adoption, all families and individuals are continually adapting to life’s changing circumstances.

While most families deal with similar basic issues, adoptive and foster families can also face issues specific to adoption. The Children’s Home’s outpatient counselors are adoption competent and experienced in working with children, adoptive families, and birthfamilies whose lives have been touched by adoption, whether the adoption took place recently or many years ago.

The Children’s Home offers a range of adoption counseling services in person or via telehealth, available to all family members:
  • Support for foster or adoptive family while waiting for a placement
  • Support for all family members after a placement has occurred
  • Support for all family members after adoption finalization
  • Support for all family members with birthfamily contact, open adoption, or reunion
  • Birthparent support after placing a baby or child for adoption

Birthparent Support Group & Events

Our birthparent specialists hold several events per year for those who have placed a baby or child for adoption. The groups and events are a safe place where birthparents can meet and share their experiences. The groups and events are free of charge and open to anybody, whether or not you have worked with The Children’s Home before. Some groups are more focused on support and others exist to celebrate who you are.

We offer:

  • Support groups as requested
  • Mother’s Day dinner event
  • Holiday party
  • One on one connection to another who placed

Contact birthparentspecialist@chomepgh.org for more information.

The birthparent groups & events are open to:

    • Birthparents who haven’t decided what they are going to do
    • Birthparents who have decided to place their baby for adoption
    • Birthparents who have placed their baby for adoption, recently or many years in the past
    • Close family members and friends of birthmothers and birthfathers
