On Thursday, November 11, 2010, the children of Child’s Way®medical day care, spent the afternoon dancing and playing music during the “ABC Animals on the Move” program. The performance was presented by Gateway to the Arts, which is a Pittsburgh organization that works “to transform the lives of children through active participation in the arts.” With music provided by Dan Meunier, percussionist, and dance styling’s by Mary Miller of the Mary Miller Dance Company, the children were taken on an imaginary walk through a forest, where they encountered many animals along the way.
As Dan kept the beat on the drum, he led the children on the forest walk. The first animal they encountered was a bird. Mary danced around the room with arms
spread wide like a bird, as the children laughed and mimicked her arm movements. During their imaginary walk, the children also encountered a slithering snake, a slow moving turtle, and a clumsy baby fawn. After every encounter, the children were encouraged to make the motions of the animals themselves.
After their walk, the children were able to dance and move around the room, while playing maracas and other instruments, and taking turns helping Dan play the drum. Whether they were crawling like a turtle, or clapping their hands together along with the music, every child had a great big smile on their face. It was an incredibly fun afternoon for the children, learning more about animals, dance, and music.
