As we find ourselves in the midst of the holiday season, The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center is excited to tell you about our Great BIG Wish—one-year-old Bennett Ryan Luhn. If you have read he and his parents, Kelly Frey and Major Jason Luhn’s story, about their own Great BIG Wish—Bennett’s 1st birthday—we hope you found it as touching and inspiring as we did. During his time in the Pediatric Specialty Hospital, Bennett’s nurse noticed a tiny droplet of sweat on the back of Bennett’s head one night. Something that could have been easily overlooked was actually life-threatening, and Bennett underwent another emergency surgery. Kelly and Jason call their stay at the Pediatric Specialty Hospital “nothing short of a miracle—a blessing!” –a Great BIG Wish come true! Bennett’s story, about his life, and the care he received at The Children’s Home & Lemieux Family Center, is one example of the hundreds of children and families we touch each year. In order to continue providing the very best care we can, we need your help now more than ever. Please take the time to fill out your own Great BIG Wish on our special ornament, which the children in our Pediatric Specialty Hospital and Child’s Way® medical day care will hang up for everyone to see. Our holiday goal is to raise $45,000 to keep our facilities and programs for our children and their families operational. Please send in your Great BIG Wish ornament today, along with your holiday donation. Children in Child's Way and the Pediatric Specialty Hospital will write your wishes on our special Great BIG Wish ornaments. Thank you for supporting the lives of the children and families we serve.Born on September 22, 2009, Bennett was diagnosed with Hydrocephalus, a severe medical condition in which there is an excess of spinal fluid that presses on the brain. After three surgeries and three weeks in the hospital, Kelly and Jason were told Bennett was able to go home. However, like many families with children requiring very serious, complicated surgeries like Bennett’s, they didn’t feel prepared to bring Bennett home. It was then that they decided to transfer Bennett to the Pediatric Specialty Hospital at The Children’s Home & Lemieux Family Center.
