Sponsor Spotlight on Highmark Inc.

Highmark

As one of the nation's leading health insurers, Highmark Inc. strives to ensure all members of the communities it serves have access to affordable, quality health care. Based in Pittsburgh, Highmark serves 3.1 million people in Western Pennsylvania through the company's health care benefits business, providing the resources to give its members a greater hand in their health.

For more than 70 years, Highmark's commitment to the community has consistently been among the company's highest priorities as it seeks to positively impact the places where its members call home. Highmark supports programs that improve access to care for underserved, underinsured or uninsured individuals through health initiatives that foster strong families and communities and programs that are focused on prevention and wellness. Each year, Highmark awards impactful grants and sponsorships through its corporate giving and the Highmark Foundation, a charitable foundation funded solely by Highmark, to support programs that serve the vital health needs of the community.

It's no secret that ensuring the health and well-being of children is one of our core areas of focus.

The Highmark Foundation recently awarded a $100,000 grant to The Children's Home of Pittsburgh and Lemieux Family Center in an effort to provide additional pediatric medical services and expand clinical staff services at the Pediatric Specialty Hospital. The grant will help fund salaries for three certified nurse practitioners, three registered nurses and a nurse education program.

Highmark also provides peer support services to children who have experienced the death of a loved one through the Highmark Caring Place, a Center for Grieving Children, Adolescents and their Families. With facilities in such Pennsylvania cities as Pittsburgh, Erie, Lemoyne and Warrendale, the Caring Place has provided more than 8,000 children and adults with grief support services since it opened in 1997.

In addition to assisting children and their families, supporting nonprofit health and human service organizations has been a part of Highmark's core values from the very beginning.

In 2003, the Highmark Walk for a Healthy Community was introduced to communities throughout Pennsylvania as an annual fundraising walk that is 100 percent underwritten and managed by Highmark to benefit nonprofit organizations across the state. Proceeds from the events have grown every year. Through 2011, more than $4.5 million has been directly donated to 180 nonprofit organizations.
