3,000th Patient Shares Special Connection with The Children's Home

The 22nd of January marked a milestone for The Children’s Home’s Pediatric Specialty Hospital. Noah Pickett became the 3,000th patient admitted to the hospital after being transferred from Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC.

“We were nervous leaving Children’s [Hospital] and it was nice having The Children’s Home to depend on,” said Noah’s mother, Lauren. “It is even more special because of Noah’s great-grandfather’s history.”

Noah and his family share a special bond with The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center. The Children’s Home was built on the former site of the St. Joseph’s Nursing Home, where Noah’s great-grandfather was a patient. The Pickett Family looked at this as a sign of hope and remembrance for the family. Noah and his great-grandfather will forever have a special connection thanks to The Children’s Home.

Born on December 26, 2008 to Lauren and Brandon Pickett at Magee-Womens Hospital of UMPC, Noah encountered breathing problems shortly after birth. The breathing problems eventually lead to a blood transfusion, full ventilator and oxygen support, multiple medications, a feeding tube, and 21 days in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit at Children’s Hospital. After spending seven days in a step-down unit, Noah was transferred to The Children’s Home to continue his wean off of medication and to aid in the feeding process.

The Pickett’s were excited to be at The Children’s Home because they were concerned about breathing problems Noah might have at home. The Children’s Home allowed the Pickett’s to stay over night and help care for their son. This helped the Pickett's become more confident in caring for Noah on his transition home.

Noah was able to be discharged from The Children’s Home on February 2, 2009. To see how Noah is currently doing, visit Lauren’s blog.
