The grounds of The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center are more beautiful thanks to the tiny hands and large hearts of the children of Child’s Way®, a day care for medically fragile children at The Children’s Home.
On Monday, July 13, 2009, Child’s Way staff members and volunteers took the eager children outside to enjoy
the summer sunshine and begin a new and exciting hands on activity. With funding from the Luke Hadley Foundation, a foundation with the mission of bringing smiles to the faces of medically fragile children, the children of Child’s Way planted their first vegetable garden. Willing and ready, the vibrant children jumped right in by digging holes, watering, and placing the plants.
My hope for the garden is that the kids can care for the vegetables daily and feel as if it is their own,” said Arran Harland, educational coordinator of Child’s Way.
Bell peppers, sweet peas, corn, tomatoes, and zucchini squash were among the various vegetables planted by the children. The vegetables will be picked and added into the kids’ daily meals at Child’s Way.
