Administrative/Clerical


Volunteer Night at The Children's Home of Pittsburgh

Where: 5324 Penn Avenue
When: The 2nd Thursday of every month
Time: 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m. (2 hours or less if the work is done)

Details:
Please try to arrive as close to 6:00 as you can.  You do not have to RSVP as to whether or not you’ll be attending, just show up and pitch in! A staff person will greet volunteers and show you what to do. We will work until 8:00 p.m. or leave sooner if the work is done.

Sample volunteer projects:
- Putting information packets together
- Stuffing, labeling, stamping envelopes
- Organizing and assembling blank patient charts
- Photocopying forms
- Folding linens
- Sanitizing children's toys
- Organizing and inventorying donations of clothes, baby supplies, craft supplies, etc.
- Other projects as needed

Nursery Receptionist
Due to the installation of a new phone system in our Pediatric Specialty Hospital, volunteers are no longer needed.  Thank you for your interest!

Babyholder

The Pediatric Specialty Hospital utilizes volunteer babyholders to hold/rock the infants.  This program operates 7 days a week from 8 a.m. until 10 p.m. There is currently is a 2 to 2 ½ year waiting list.

Commitment:
Consists of an assigned permanent 2 hour time slot once a week. We ask that you make at least a one year commitment.

Requirements:
- At least 18 years of age
- Physically capable of holding an infant securely and sitting for 2 hours
- In good health and free of infection or recent exposure to communicable diseases
- Able to obtain clear State Police background check and Child Abuse Clearances
- Must provide proof of current negative TB test
- Attend a group orientation session

Do not attempt to get clearances or T.B. test, since these need to be current when you begin.


Child's Way Volunteer

Child's Way volunteers work with medically fragile children. Volunteer duties may include helping staff with monitoring children, supervision on playground, assisting with arts and crafts, story time, circle time, feeding, diapering. Volunteer applicants must be willing to work with children with disabilities and other special needs. Great learning experience for students going into the fields of physical, occupational or speech therapy, pediatric nursing, special education, or other medical fields.

Commitment:
- 3 hours per week minimum commitment for either a 3 month "summer only" position, or 6 months during the school year.
- Attend a group orientation session and tour held up to 3 times a year depending upon how many new volunteers are needed (dates TBD). Please note: Priority is given to individuals in the order that they contact the Volunteer Coordinator and to students who require credits for graduation. Selection as a volunteer may also be based upon available time slots.
- Volunteers are needed Monday through Friday from 9:00 a.m.--12:00 p.m. and again from 2:00 p.m.--5:00 p.m. Volunteers are not needed during the 12:00--2:00 p.m. nap period. We count on our volunteers, so volunteers are expected to call off if they cannot attend at their scheduled time.

Requirements:
- Volunteers must be at least 16 years old
- Must take a tour of facility and attend a group orientation session before acceptance as volunteer
- Must provide current Child Abuse Clearance and current Criminal History Background check clearance
- Must provide proof of current negative TB test
- Must be able to lift up to 50 lbs
- Must be able to easily get on/off the floor
- Prior experience with infants and toddlers a plus
- Special needs experience desirable, but not necessary
