Extraordinary Story time

5/14/2010

Children’s book author and illustrator, Will Hillenbrand, made a special visit to The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center, on May 14, to bring his words and pictures to life for the children of Child’s Way®.

Hoping to inspire children to enjoy and pursue reading, writing, and illustrating on their own, Hillenbrand spent the morning reading a variety of his colorful books to the children. His vivid pictures of brightly colored animals and beautiful images of nature, jumped off the page, while his simple stories carried important and inspiring messages for the children.

One of the many books Hillenbrand chose to read, was What a Treasure!, authored by his wife, Jane. The story follows a young Mole and his day of digging with his new shovel. Along the way, Mole comes to realize how special something small can be, such as an acorn to a squirrel, and most importantly he discovers the power of friendship.

To further demonstrate to the children how a book is created, Hillenbrand drew one-of-a-kind pictures right in front of them. The children watched as a few black lines on a paper transformed into a sleeping bear and other animals.

It was an exciting day for the children, sharing in an extraordinary story time—the words of the author himself.
