Child's Way Recycled Art Day

3/18/2010

On Thursday, March 18, the children of Child's Way® spent the day creating recycled art for the Geek Art and Green Innovators (GA/GI) Festival. They created beautiful flowers using old vinyl window blinds, weather protected papers, cup lids, and scraps of magazine with the help of Lindsay Woge of Fresh Heirlooms—Green gifts and Eco-friendly Home Décor.

“The kids had a great time painting and gluing,” said Arran Harland, education coordinator for Child’s Way. “It is nice that the kids were able to participate almost like mini volunteers for something in the community.”

The GA/GI Festival was created by The Penn Avenue Arts Initiative, who works to revitalize the Penn Avenue area of Friendship between Negley and Mathilda Avenues. Their mission is “using the arts to enhance public perception of the district, instill pride in the neighborhood, foster inter and intra community ties, and establish an artist’s niche.”

Pronounced “GAH-gee,” the festival was a first for Pittsburgh, mixing art, technology, and ecology innovations. Businesses and galleries along Penn Avenue worked together to showcase the art that was created for the all-day festival, held on April 2.

The Children’s Home & Lemieux Family Center was honored to display the Child's Way flowers along the fence at the front of our building. This display was titled, “Outdoor Salvage Art Flower Display,” and participants were encouraged to drive, walk, or ride by The Children’s Home to see the children’s special creation.
