Mended Little Hearts

Andrea and Brett Baer, local program coordinators for Mended Little Hearts of Southwestern PA, are teaming up with us starting in August. Mended Little Hearts, a support program for parents of children with heart defects and heart disease, is dedicated to inspiring hope in those who care for the youngest heart patients of all. They offer resources and a caring support network, as families find answers and move forward to find healing and hope.

Mended Little Hearts of Southwestern PA, in its second year as a chapter, is one branch of a 60 chapter national organization. Andrea and her husband Brett took on the role as Local Program Coordinators shortly after their son Trenton was born with a congenital heart defect (AVSD) two years ago.

Trenton was born on March 17, 2009, with a complete AVSD. At three months old the little boy underwent open heart surgery at The Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh of UPMC. As Andrea and Brett felt scared, confused, and alone, Andrea found a friend whose son had the same type of CHD and was a member of Mended Little Hearts. "I found a member of Mended Little Hearts online who educated and supported my husband and I through this difficult time," said Andrea.

Impressed with the organization and eager to help others, Andrea and Brett began to coordinate Mended Little Hearts of Southwestern PA to promote hope, help, and healing. There now are 86 families who are official members of the Southwestern PA Chapter of Mended Little Hearts! They receive weekly emails and newsletters about up and coming support events. Partnering with hospitals to provide several programs, Mended Little Hearts connects families in crisis with other parents who have survived the shock of learning their child has a heart problem, helping them to navigate the maze of medical decisions and procedures, and map out a plan for the future.

We will be holding local support meetings the first Tuesday of every month in The Children's Home & Lemieux Family Center conference rooms. These support meetings will give families and caregivers a chance to gain information and connect with others who have gone through similar experiences. Before every meeting a home-cooked meal will be provided for members, family, and friends. Mended Little Hearts of Southwestern PA's collaboration with The Children's Home & Lemieux Family Center will be cherished and celebrated as we offer families much needed communication, education, and awareness.
