Adopting a Baby
At The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh & Lemieux Family Center, we would like to help you turn your dreams of parenting into a reality. Our professional, caring adoption staff will work with you on an adoption plan that is just right for you. Although the adoption process is not always easy, we are very confident that it will be worth the effort and that you will be supported by our staff every step of the way.
You will have your own Social Worker to help you through the entire process and you can feel assured that your child’s birthparent will have the same support from their Birthparent Counselor. The adoption staff works carefully as a team on every adoption, ensuring that everyone’s needs are met, especially the child, who is always the primary focus.
We believe your adopted child will benefit by having a complete understanding of his or her own adoption story. Whether you have an open adoption, semi-open or closed adoption, our program is designed to address the long-term needs of everyone involved. Therefore, we offer a lifetime of support services.
About our Adoption Program
The Children’s Home is a full service, domestic, infant adoption agency serving Western Pennsylvania.
We hold three licenses through the Department of Public Welfare: Foster Family Care, Adoption Services and Private Children and Youth Services. The Children’s Home is classified as a 501C non-profit organization.
The Children’s Home places approximately 15-20 infants for adoption each year. About half of our placements are Caucasian and half are African American or Mixed Race infants.
All of our Social Workers are experienced adoption professionals with Masters Degrees.
It is the philosophy of The Children's Home's Adoption Program to bring in new adoptive families when we feel confident that their waiting time for a baby will be reasonable. The Director of Adoption continually evaluates the most appropriate times to conduct Orientation Meetings for new adoptive families.
Who is eligible to adopt through The Children's Home of Pittsburgh?
Adoptive families must live within a 50-mile radius of Pittsburgh and live in the state of Pennsylvania.
The Children’s Home accepts completed family studies for families who live outside of this radius only if they are adopting an African-American or Mixed Race infant.
The Children’s Home does not discriminate on the basis of age, gender, religion, ethnic background, income, or race.
What is the fee to adopt?
The total fee to adopt at The Children’s Home of Pittsburgh is $24,000. This fee is payable in three installments. The first installment is due after your application has been approved. The second installment is due after the completion of your family study. The third installment is due after a child is placed with you. Special arrangements are sometimes made for children with specific special needs, and scholarship money is occasionally available in those cases. All costs will be outlined for you in a written contract with no hidden fees.
